Post Op: Back Home Day 1

It seems that the events of this past week have finally caught up with all of us. The house is quiet most of the time because at any given moment one of us is asleep, either from exhaustion or some kind of powerful medication. Even the boys are acting a little loopy. All and all, both Wil and I are thrilled to be home with our pups and sleeping in our own bed. He needs to take round the clock pain killers, so short waking moments are still rare though relatively comfortable. He is not allowed to bend, twist, or lift anything heavier than a carton of milk for the next 6 weeks and will have to go back to the hospital in about a week to get a back brace put on. He can walk around the house, raid the pantry for some Girl Scout Cookies, and get to the bathroom unassisted. We've turned the living room into the recovery center. Wil's sleeping in there now because it's just easier to get to everything that way. I dragged our spare mattress to put on top of our sleeper sofa's mattress today, so he'd have more room to stretch--and Paddy can have his snuggle buddy back as well. The boys have been exceptional around him. They know Papa is not feeling well and have been keeping constant bedside vigil. Last night when Wil was still sleeping on the sofa, Paddy slept on the floor next to him and was never more than a foot away. Occasionally, he would get up to rest his face on Wil's chest. Wil said Brutus came up to him a couple of times through out the night to check on him and give reassuring licks on Papa's head. Our friends Mara and Steve took the boys out for a run at the park with their dog Samson, and Carol and Bryan brought us delicious dinner and 2 desserts (they really love and know us well). We had a very good day. It's a little difficult right now but I've never been happier to be able to look pass surgery and toward recovery.
