Chase's Sunday Funnies

My dear friends and fellow mommas have been telling me that I need to write down all the funny things Chase does before I forget them, and I'm hoping that this Sunday Funnies will become a regular part of my blogging and something I can look back and copy onto a journal when I'm much less lazy. Here goes.

Our friend Brad brought us the most yummy gummies from a famous store in Heidelberg and my kid is obsessed with them. We reserve them for special occasion as a reward for Chase (sitting on a potty, finishing her meal,...etc) and occasionally, like today when the snow has fallen all day and we're too lazy to go outside, as a bribe. We've already gone through a bag of the star-shaped ones and I just opened the heart-shaped bag this morning.

Me: Ok, you get to have a few gummies because you used the potty! How many do you want?
Chase: Yippeee! TWO! (FYI: Chase only knows to count 1, 2, 5, and 10).
Me: Ok, here are two little hearts.
Chase, after her treats disappeared in a hurry: Mo hart babie peez? (Translation: "more baby (small) hearts, please?"
Me: Because you asked so nicely, here are two more.
Chase, with both arms raised: YAY! Hart babieeee!!!

Chase, after seeing a brown hyena on TV: Booo (Brutus)!!!

It started snowing pretty early at our house and has yet to stop all day. As soon as she woke up and saw the white stuff, she went nuts.
Chase, running around the house looking for her winter necessities: Mittennnnnnnnnn!!!! Hep peez (help please).
Me: There's not enough on the ground right now to play with, Baby. We'll have to wait until after you nap, ok?
Chase: Hat! Hat?!? Hat peez!
Me: No, Baby, we'll have to wait a little.
Chase: Pay en schnow peez (play in snow, please)!
Me: Chase...
Repeat a few hundred times through out the day

This scene is a regular around her play kitchen
Wil: May I please have a cookie?
Chase, with her palm held up: Money.

It Made My Morning

Regardless of which side of the health care reform you are on, I think we all can agree on the funny.

P.S. I do like the pattern of our blog. Cute baby, cute baby, travel, BALLS!!! Repeat. I know at least one person is chuckling. You're welcome, Barnes!

And I Didn't Mention the Most Costly Part of the Day!

Forgot about that bit. Right as we were leaving the house to head to Cologne, the first time, I noticed a crack in our windshield. Stopped at the dealership on the way over and found out that it would have cost us nearly $1,000 without insurance to replace it. We gladly paid $500 deductible. Everything is more expensive in Germany.

A Crappy Start to a Wonderful Weekend

Long title but you should be happy I waited 3 days to write this and decided against naming this one "This Post was Brought to You by Profanity." Wil had a four-day weekend, and I was dying to just get out of Kaiserslautern. The weather had been horribly cold, but I thought I could brave the frostbite with my sanity intact instead of going to KMCC one more time to walk off my boredom and subsequently open a can of whoop ass on the next spastic 11-year-old, who is destined to run into me--AGAIN--while I'm holding an extra large and very cold beverage. In case you didn't get all that: I REALLY HAD TO GET OUT.

So off to Cologne we went.

We probably could have made it a day trip since it was only a little over 2 hours away, but I was unsure of how Wil's back would behave at the end of a long sightseeing day plus another two hours back. This trip was momentous because it was our first overnight trip since his back gave out in October and the surgery in November, and have I mentioned that I really had to get out? So the plan was that I was going to get up early on Friday, drop the boys off at the kennel while Wil got the baby up and ready for the trip, and we would head out and arrive in Cologne about 11 a.m. Here's exactly how it went:

7:00: I woke up feeling like I had singlehandedly drank the entire content of our bar. Surely a cup of decaf tea before bed would not do that to me. Rolled over and went back to sleep.

8:00-9:00: Opened my eyes. Blinked. It felt like there was a very small and very naughty leprecon swinging a bat inside of my skull. Elbowed my husband, who was still fast asleep, and told him that I thought I was going to projectile vomit on him. Then I heard on the monitor, "HI! Elmo...Momma...Papa...BooPaddy!" Wil got the baby up, dressed, and fed while I sat very still and quietly holding up my head in my hands front of the computer.

10:30-11:15: 800 mg of Ibuprofen dulled my headache enough that I could actually stand up straight in a shower. Still sucked very bad. Made a mad dash to pack while my angel of a husband handled everything else.

11:45: Arrived at the kennel to drop off the boys. Saw the one person I probably didn't need to see for the rest of my life and two of her obnoxious Boxers, whom happened to be Brutus' #1 arch nemesis from Baumholder and apparently were also staying at the kennel for the weekend. Now I really felt like vomiting. Asked my husband to go back inside the kennel to let the owners know that under no circumstances should my dogs and hers come within ten yards of each others unless she was prepared to lose limbs.

12:15: Went to a nearby post to get gas. The attendant informed everyone that the system was down and we would have to wait at least 15 minutes for it to come back. FYI: we get gas on post or at ESSO gas stations with ration card for the same price as what people stateside are paying. Anywhere else we pay what the Europeans pay, which is about double the cost. We decided that we could make it to Cologne with 3/4 of a tank that we had and would fill up there.

13:00: My child promptly passed out from having screamed for the last 30 minutes or so. Just in time for us to pull in to a McD's to feed and change her very full diaper.

13:05-14:30: Wil informed me while in line that the baby was wet and I discovered that everything from her waist down was soaked. He fetched an extra outfit out of her suitcase while I held up the line to the bathroom because the changing table completely blocked access to it when in use. Way to go, German engineers! Surprisingly, we had a rather pleasant meal with no major disasters after the outfit change.

15:00: Found ourselves back at home because Wil forgot his medicine and we needed to grab another outfit for the baby to replace the now used extra outfit. I grabbed 3 sets of everything. While on the way out the door, the baby pooped a massive pooped.

15:15: Having no success pinning down an overexhausted child, who did not want a diaper change and only cared to tickle (scratch) me, I yelled out in frustration, "I'M NOT GOING!!!"

15:30: Wil repacked the car--again--and called the hotel--again--to inform them that we'd be really late checking in. Finally on the road.

17:15: In Cologne and looking for an Esso gas station. Followed the direction from our Garmin that eventually led to a gas station that was not an Esso.

17:30: At another gas staion (via the direction of our trusty Garmin), still not an ESSO, which had apparently been bought out by everybody else in the greater Cologne area. Wil forked over 20 Euros for a third of a tank.

17:50: Checking in at our hotel. I sat and cried on the bed thinking about how miserable Brutus was at the kennel with that obnoxious Boxer barking at him from across the kennel. Wil said I would feel better with dinner in my stomach even though I had no appetite. The baby started saying "mmmmmm...." as soon as we spoke of food.

18:30-19:00: Walking around in sub zero temperature from restaurant to restaurant trying to siphon the menus to make sure that we were not accidentally feeding our child some kind of dairy ingredients. She ate a plate of bow tie noodles with some brown gravy. I cried some more at the dinner table and was ready to call it a night.

20:30-21:30: Back in the hotel room and discovered that our baby would no longer sleep in her pack n' play as long as she knew that we were just feet away. She spent the next hour flinging her little body back on forth on top of ours in the dark.

22:30: Finally, the room is quiet and we all felt asleep.

I woke up about 6 o'clock the following morning, got ready, and told Wil that I was going out for a stroll. I really needed that to clear my head from yesterday's fiasco. The amazing spires of Cologne Cathedral could be seen from our hotel and I thought I would try to get there. By the time I stepped out in the bitterly cold and windy street, it was about 7:30 but still pretty dark. It didn't take long for me to find my way to the Cathedral. I quietly took in the sight before heading inside. It was eerie quiet as I was the only tourist there. It was truly remarkable to see all the carving and stonework in person knowing that every single inch of that massive cathedral was touched by thousands of artisans' hands over 600+ years span. I sat down to have a chit chat with God in his big house, thanking Him for seeing us though those past terrible few months, and letting Him know that I was grateful for the opportunity to be there with my healthy and happy family. I believe that there's one God for all of us, and regardless of where we choose to worship or what name we call Him by, He can still hear us. I felt calm and made peace with putting yesterday behind me and starting our day with a good spirit. Took a few pictures and headed back to the hotel. Wil and the baby was already up and playing, and we headed down to the lobby to have breakfast. If you are planning to visit Cologne, I can't recommend Hotel Domstern enough even it's just for breakfast alone! We ate our weights' worth in French soft cheese, freshly baked bread, homemade yogert, and lots of meat. And let's not forget the never ending big mugs of caramel macchiato. We were one of the very first to get to the breakfast area and most definitely the last to leave.

After breakfast, we headed out to the Cathedral. By this time, the whole square was packed with tourists, but we somehow managed to find a room inside the cathedral to see the possession of the Cardinal during mass. It was such an amazing experience to hear the organs and the prayers. One of the bishops told Wil to stay put where he was because the Cardinal would walk right by us and bless the baby. I didn't hear any of this and told him to move because it looked like he and Chase's big green stroller was in the way. We still had a pretty good shot to shove the baby into the Cardinal's blessing way had my child not decided to bark. You heard me. The whole place was quiet except for the low hymns until Miss Chase decided that mass should be liven up with some puppy dog action. Needless to say, the Cardinal walked right by our kid to the next peacefully sleeping quiet baby to bless him. His parents were over the moon, Wil and I were mortified, and everyone around us tried hard to not bust out laughing. After taking a few quick pictures in the cold, we trekked back to the hotel and helped ourselves to a few more buckets of hot chocolate before heading out to Lindt's Chocolate Museum.

The Museum was an interesting looking place on the Rhine, easy enough to find, and, most importantly, warm! As soon as we stepped inside, the gorgeous smell of chocolate turned my legs all wobbly. Really, it was a perfect thing to do on a cold day. There's just enough "museum" type of info mixed in with the fun exhibits of machines, test kitchen, and little rain forest. It helped that they were seemingly throwing really good chocolate at us at every turn as well. We wrapped up our visit with a late lunch in their Cafe, which proved to be the highlight of our trip. The food was simply incredible and we lingered far longer at our little table next to the river because we just couldn't stop eating. All and all, it was the perfect "slow travel" kind of weekend. We didn't get to see everything on the agenda, but great time was had by all. The following day we had dinner with our great friends, the Carrolls, to celebrate Brady's 2nd birthday. I don't really miss living in Baumholder, but I would gladly go back if it meant we would get to spend more time with our friends.

This is quite long enough and I didn't forget the pictures! Hope your weekend was restful and fun!

Like a New Woman

Not that I didn't love having Wil home with us from October until last week (I have already erased the hospital bit out of my brain), but lounging around with him all day just kind of messed up Chase's and my routine and schedule we heavily relied on. Now that he's back at work, I feel like all is right with the world again. I guess it's a mental thing. Having him at work means he CAN be at work, which means he's not hurt THAT badly anymore, and I can be at my work doing my best mothering. I get up early to let Jillian Michaels punish me for 20 minutes, have breakfast, jump in a shower, get the baby up and feed her breakfast, then we're off to our adventures for the morning (playgroup, library, running errands, visiting Wil at work, etc.). We come home, have lunch, and I pick up around the house while the baby goes down for a nap for a few hours. Then Chase and I make dinner together and Wil gets home just before dinner is ready, leaving plenty of time for Papa-Baby catching up time before dinner, bath time, books, and bed. I like the predictability of our day and feel like I finally got my groove back. I'm now the fun mom I always wanted to be for Chase, and I actually have the stamina to keep up with her, which comes as a surprise to me more than anyone else. Thank you, Jillian!

Now if you are on Facebook and know about Chase's bangs trimming fiasco, I know you are expecting pictures. Wil's been telling me that he didn't want her to get a haircut, and I just assumed that he wanted to hold on to the baby's mullet a little longer for sentimental reasons. What he didn't say was that he didn't want ME to cut the baby's hair. I trimmed the baby's bangs once before and it proved to be completely uneventful and easy, so I didn't really think twice about chopping it off this morning when I couldn't possibly stand all that hair in her eyes one more second (and to answer your question, my child will not keep a clip in unless I constantly bribe her with sweets). Well, let just say that it didn't quite go how I thought it would. The first snip took a little more off than I had planned, and I think Chase saw my face and panicked. She started to move as the scissors clammed down for a second chomp, thus causing the cut to go further to the left side of her face and gave the appearance of a bowl cut. I just had the worst time not laughing at that last sentence. Anyway, I was in such a shock after seeing what was going on and froze while still holding the scissors up at Chase's eye level. You see where I'm going with this? It was like a bad accident that I couldn't take my eyes away, and I didn't see Chase's moving toward the sharp point of the scissors until the very second her eye met it. I was able to jerk away the scissors quick enough that she didn't end up with a sharp metal toothpick in her eyeball, but it still poked her hard enough to make her cry. I was now in a full panic mode and was prying my child's tearful eye open to see if there was brain matter leaking out of it, because, SURELY, a hole in the eye would go nicely with her partial bowl cut. Needless to say, I'm never EVER going anywhere near my kid's hair with a pair of scissors again. Now I'm debating whether to let the bangs grow in for a few months and take her to see a professional to get a new "big girl" do then or go ahead and let my stylist try to fix the freaking mess and turn the hair into something really short. Chase's still napping right now, but I'll add the picture to the post as soon as she's up. Get ready for a chuckle and to feel a little bad for her that her parents will be pointing and laughing until the missing chunks grow in.

Longggg

Here it is again, my thinking out loud. I've been trying to make a mental note about what to write here--how to sum up what's been going on with our lives in one neat short post. Then I realized that nothing in my life has ever been conveniently neat and gave up. However, to the best of my ability, I give you the mess list:

-The holidays were wonderful. Christmas was fun and the Germans in our village spent most of the night and the following day setting off fireworks as the bells rung to welcome the New Year. Much to our surprise, our darling daughter slept, however fitfully, through having a small rocket shot directly at her bedroom window. We're still on for Festivus next year if you are interested.
-We managed to miss ALL of the Christmas markets because 1) I was not entirely convinced that my husband, who was still in a back brace at the time, could hack being bodychecked by a crowd fueled by mandatory gluhwein and 2) the weather was extra wet and crappy. I was looking to not put myself in a situation that would find me yelling for help while trying to hold up a grown man and an unruly toddler. We'll hopefully make it up later this year.
-Wil healed up so well that his surgeon gave him a pass on the second dreaded back brace. He's been back at work for a week now and is grumpily adjusting to waking up at 5:30 again after having been lounging with the boys, annoying me with random odd questions, and feeding Chase candy for the past few months. He's still taking a bit of medicine to dull the burning sensation in his leg, which he doesn't want me to bring up because he says everybody has worried enough about him, and to help him rest a bit better at night. We miss him. I don't know where we'll find ourselves in a year, as far as the Army career is concerned, but I'm hopeful that we'll stay out of the hospital for at least that long. Hip, hip, hooray!
-Speaking of his annoying me, the man has no memory of almost anything from October-early December. For example: during our conversation about our friend Becky, who had her baby Eli while Wil was hospitalized.
Wil: No, I have never seen the baby!
Me: Do you remember getting a clearance from your surgeon to walk down the hall to visit her at the next ward?
Wil (raising his voice and starting to look at me like I was crazy): Yes, I remember going down to Mother & Baby, but the baby wasn't born yet!
Me: It's called "Mother AND Baby" because, in order to get a bed there, you must have just given birth.
Wil: But...no! I remember!!!!
Repeat this format about everything that happened in nearly two months. We know it's the meds but it doesn't make "discussing" his version of what went on any less aggravating. I still love you and your non-existent short term memory, Baby!
-I know every mother thinks their child is the cutest/smartest/most likely to become the person to discover a cure for AIDS, cancer, etc., but I'm SURE that my kid is actually going to do it. I love that we get to hang out together and have fun all day. Now that she has decided to do away with morning naps for good, the world is our oyster! Ok, maybe not the world but definitely Kaiserslautern area. We're going to playgroups, story time at the library, and I just signed her up for weekly Moms & Tots Gymnastic class. She can specifically request which book about which bunny she would like me to read (why are bunnies such popular characters in children's literature, btw?). We've got "Jorgi Bunny" (Curious George and the Bunnies), "Noisy Bunny," "Peter Bunny," and a few others. She's very vocal and has an opinion about everything. She is learning her colors, shapes, numbers, and alphabets, and slowly coming out of her shell when meeting new people. Her vocabulary is reaching about a hundred and expanding rapidly everyday. My little charmer has also taken to call our landlord, George, "Jorgi," a name that I'm sure only his mother and his wife have used comfortably. She also decided that his wife should be called "Mimi," thus rendering them powerless against her cuteness and probably earning her name a spot on their will.
-We've been enjoying the snow more than I could have anticipated. This year is so incredibly different than the last. Last year, we just moved in and was so miserably cooped up in our cold house. This year she demands that we pile on our jackets, hats, mittens, boots (all of which she has to individually point out and identify before we could proceed outside), and romp in the snow for at least an hour every day. I'm still a little cold but the boys, especially Brutus, are ridiculously happy.
-Now that Wil is on the mend, we're making up for lost traveling time. Our days in Europe are numbered and we want to make the most of every 3 and 4-day weekends while we're here. The first trip in nearly four months will be a short one to Cologne and Cochem to test the water (read back). Next month we're going to see Prague and a bit more of Germany, which will then be followed by a visit to Bonn to see my brother compete. April is our trip back to the States and we'll go to Keukenhof when the flowers are in bloom. My Type-A planning habits are kicking into high gear right now, can't you tell? Expect pictures!
-I started "30 Days Shred" last week and have actually enjoyed it! I'm not trying to lose any weight but would like to tone up. My goal is to be in the best physical shape going into our next pregnancy, just in case I should be blessed with 9 months of all day all night sickness and crippling sciatica again. I hate being thin but fluffy.
-About the pregnancy, I will say that I don't feel quite ready for it. I love our life right now, although I also think that our family is not quite completed as yet. I'm not the kind of mom who can handle or want Irish twins and we made sure there was no possibility of that. Now that Chase is almost two and I'm turning 32 in the summer, I feel more of a pressure to go down that road. But I really have no desire to be hugely pregnant (or worse yet, with a newborn!!!) when we have to pcs early next year. Decisions, decisions.

I have had far too much chocolate before bedtime and am now very wired and rambling as you can plainly see. I'm sure I'm missing all kinds of stuff here, but, look MOM, I have updated the blog with a real post, videos, and pictures within a week! Good night, Friends!
